Happy 2019, everyone! Have you made any goals for the new year? Now, I’m going to be up front with you – I have a love/hate relationship with the whole “New Year’s Resolution” concept. On one hand, I love the idea of starting off the new year by challenging myself to be better. On the other hand, I suck at them. As far as I can remember, I have never been able to stick to a New Year’s resolution that I have set for myself- no matter how big or small.
This year, instead of trying to commit to some rigid resolution or three, I decided I wanted to try something different. I sat down and thought about my general yearlong goals, and things I can do to work towards them. Rather than try to accomplish x thing for x number of days, I’m going to try to do one thing towards each goal every week. Just. One. Thing. If I can do at least one thing a week, I will be happy. So, without further ado, here are my general goals for 2019.
#1: Focus on health and wellness
One of my main goals for 2019 is to take better care of myself and this body I reside in. Law school has taken a toll on me, both physically and mentally. I’m tired all the time, I know my diet is…sucky, to say the least, and I’m not nearly as active as I need to be. I this has effected my mental health, as well. This year is going to be filled with so many changes, and I actually want to be able to enjoy them. Some of the small things I want to do to work towards this goal are:
- Get more sleep – 5 hours a night just isn’t cutting it anymore; who woulda thought??
- Drink more water – DD cold brews don’t count, man.
- More gym, less Netflix – goes without saying.
- Stick to weekly meal planning and grocery shopping – live that meal prep life, son!
#2: End law school on a high note
I’m in my last academic quarter of law school as we speak (hooooolycrap), and I only have 6 weeks of classes and one week of finals left before I start my final internship. After that, I graduate (again, hooooooolycrap). One of my goals for 2019 is to make sure that I make the most out of these last few months. Some of the things I want to do to optimize my last quarter:
- Be well prepared for all my classes – all the reading, all the time.
- Stop procrastinating so much – a girl can only handle so many all-nighters in her life.
- Take advantage of extracurricular opportunities – networking, trying to get published, etc.
#3: Get organized
This is one of my most general goals for 2019. I am not an organized person. Period. Full stop. No matter how many planners I buy, no matter how many storage containers I invest in – I am a mess. BUT I want to change that. Some of the things I want to work on:
- Keep on top of laundry – this includes actually putting it away after it gets washed (someone shame me, please).
- Keep track of important dates (appointments, due dates, everything) – Use. The damn. Planner.
- Work on de-cluttering the apartment – become one with the trash bag and donation box.
#4: Start planning for the future
As I said earlier, 2019 is going to be full of so many changes. My husband (side note – will I ever not feel weird calling him that?) and I will both be graduating from school, hopefully starting new careers, possibly moving, and thinking about starting a family. I want to do as much as I can to make those transitions as seamless as possible. Some things that will help:
- Start saving more and spending less – we’re both terrible at budgeting, so this will be FUN.
- Be proactive on the job hunt – network network NETWORK.
- Build the blog – both as a creative outlet and potential business (emphasis on potential).
- Strengthen important relationships – on a serious note, we all need to be better to the people who love us (and this goes double for me).
So there you have it – my goals for 2019. If you’re interested in following along, I am going to try to (semi) regularly document my progress for each goal. I’d like to aim to post once a week, but that seems a bit too much like a resolution, doesn’t it?
What about you- do you have any big goals for the new year? Let me know!
Awesome goals!
